Right after water, having a good supply of emergency food might be the most important thing to help you survive a natural disaster or some other form of major disaster.
An excellent mindset to have is to “Store What You Use, and Use What You Store”. In other words, store foods that you are accustomed to & that you like, and then USE them. Rotate them using the ”First In, First Out” method.
Our first goal will be to build the suggested minimum 3-day supply.
Consider foods that can be:
- Good tasting
- Stored properly
- Easily accessible
- Easily prepared
Be sure to include a manual can opener.
Avoid salty foods or others that will make you more thirsty.
Lighweight foods, and those with a high liquid content are good choices, too.
It might be nice to have some special comfort foods, like tea or coffee, and hard candy. ( I would chose chocolate, but it isn’t the best for all temps!)
Along with the long-term food supply you store in your home, it is always wise to have an emergency food supply kit that you can grab and evacuate with. This kit should contain a minimum of three days worth of food and water for each member of the family. You may consider keeping it in your car so that you always have it accessible, and having a separate G.O.O.D.( get out of Dodge) or as I call it, READY BAG (RB), in your house that you can get to quickly when evacuating.
